What kanna actually is

Kanna is Sceletium tortuosum, a succulent from South Africa traditionally chewed or brewed. The active compounds are alkaloids, chiefly mesembrine.

How it hits, and when

15 to 30 minutes, lasting 2 to 4 hours. Most people describe it as bright, chatty and sociable rather than sedating, which is why it turns up in the pre-going-out part of the shelf.
